Mayday Mayday

This week marks May Day.
Do you remember celebrating May Day as a child? While we certainly didn’t celebrate it in our home growing up (though it would have been great to see the look on my dad’s face if my mom declared herself May Queen and asked us to toss fresh flower petals over her head), an elementary school teacher or two throughout my youth inevitably sent me dancing around a makeshift maypole.
Well, there’s a different kind of mayday going on in my house this week. And it has nothing to do with daisies and dancing.
It has to do with my 17 month-old son Jack living with a perpetual wedgie for two weeks.
The poor thing. He says several words by now. And I think mayday could be his next because this kid needs saving – from his pants.
His grandma has been visiting from New York and has perfected the art of tenderly hugging him while simultaneously grasping at his pants (or shorts or pajama bottoms) and doing a tuck-and-tug that leaves the elastic part somewhere between his neck and belly button.
I think he’s starting to realize it isn’t right because of the look on our faces when we turn our backs briefly only to find that his sporty shorts have suddenly taken on a Daisy Dukes-esque aura and the cute writing (high up) on his T-shirt has been gobbled up by the waistband of those Dukes.
My mother justifies the act by saying she’s looking to keep him warm. But if the issue is tucking in his shirts, why can’t he wear his shirt tucked in the same way as his daddy? Why the extra step of stretching those pants to the outer limits of the elastic?
If anyone can explain this bizarre phenomenon to me, I’m all ears.
And so is my son. That is, if he can hear you through his pants.

This is what I woke up to this morning. Grandma obviously got to him first. Please note the tucked in socks. I haven’t seen that since 1988. Oy.
